Outline:

  • Unit 1 (Weeks 1-5): Tools of the Trade and the Dutch Masters Method
    Immerse yourself in the art of preparation. From the varied brushes, like the filbert hog hair, to the texture and longevity of Belgian linen canvases, you'll familiarize yourself with the primary tools used in oil painting. As part of this unit, students will also gather and prepare their materials, setting the stage for the weeks to come. You’ll learn how to approach a variety of different subjects; from still life and landscape to portrait painting. All the while, you’ll travel back in time to the Renaissance period as you learn about the Dutch Masters painting technique. Embrace the discipline of painting in layers and building up depth and luminosity. Witness firsthand the magical transformation from a detailed underpainting to a luminous, highly detailed masterpiece.

  • Unit 2 (Weeks 6-8): Basic Techniques and Introduction to Alla Prima
    At this point we move into our unit on direct painting, also known as alla prima. Start your hands-on journey by learning the basics of the alla prima technique. Understand the nuances of working with wet-on-wet layers, and discover the joys and challenges of completing a painting in a single session.

  • Unit 3 (Weeks 9-10): Bringing it All Together - Your Masterpiece
    With the skills and techniques you've accumulated, embark on a personal project. Under Jordan's guidance, conceptualize and execute a painting that synthesizes all you've learned, culminating in a piece you'll be proud to showcase.

  • Minimum Age:

    • 10 years old. This is to ensure a level of maturity that aligns with the course's objectives. Additionally, some of the materials used in oil painting, such as certain solvents, pigments, and mediums, can be hazardous if not handled properly. Teens and adults are more likely to understand and adhere to safety guidelines and have a longer attention span and can concentrate on detailed instructions and tasks better than younger children. Complexity of the Subject: Oil painting techniques can be intricate and nuanced. Children aged 12 and above are generally more capable of grasping these concepts than younger kids.

Materials List:

  1. Canvas:

    • 4 (16” X 20”) Stretched canvases

    • 5 (9” X 12”) Canvas boards

  2. Brushes:

    • Filbert hog hair brushes (sizes 2, 6, and 10)

    • Filbert synthetic brushes (sizes 2, 6, and 10)

    • Round brushes (sizes 1 and 3 for finer details)

    • 1-2” flat or wash brush (Make sure it’s not a watercolor brush)

  3. Paints (Basic color palette to start):

    • Titanium White

    • Ivory Black

    • Cadmium Yellow (medium or pale)

    • Cadmium Red

    • Ultramarine Blue

    • Burnt Umber

    • Yellow Ochre

  4. Solvents and Mediums:

    • Gamsol: Get enough to fill up 2 (12 oz) jars. (for thinning paint, creating glazes, cleaning brushes)

    • Artist Grade Linseed oil (for thinning paints, glazing, and improving flow)

    • Galkyd or Liquin (fast-drying medium, optional, for accelerating drying time)

  5. Palette:

    • A flat, non-porous surface for mixing paints. Glass, wooden or acrylic palettes are fine.

  6. Palette Knifes:

    • For mixing paints and creating texture.

  7. Containers:

    • In addition to the jars of Gamsol, please also bring 1-2 (9 or 12 oz) jars to create glazes with.

  8. Rags or Paper Towels:

    • Old t-shirts work best, we’ll use these for erasing, cleaning brushes, wiping excess, etc.

  9. Sketchbook or Paper:

    • For note taking, planning compositions and practicing.

  10. Charcoal or Pencil:

    • For initial sketching on the canvas.

  11. (Optional) Easel:

    • A portable or studio easel to hold the canvas while painting.

  12. (Optional) Gamvar (Glossy Varnish)

    • A protective finish to apply once the painting is completely dry.
